Customer Service That Brings People Back

Customer Service

SECTION 1 ยท LESSON 2

People forget what they bought. They remember how you made them feel.

By the end you will be able to: welcome any customer, use the LISTEN, TRANSLATE, MATCH, CHECK, SET method for health goals, and handle tough moments calmly.

Why hemp retail is different

Plenty of customers walk in a little nervous. Some grew up hearing that anything cannabis was dangerous. Some are not sure hemp THC is even legal. Some want help with sleep or stress and feel awkward saying so.

Your job is to make all of that feel normal. Warm, knowledgeable and zero judgment is the formula.

The first 10 seconds

  • Look up, smile, and say hello right away.
  • Ask: "Have you shopped with us before?" It tells you how much guidance they want.
  • Keep your body language open. Phones down, arms uncrossed.

Helping with health goals: the 5-step method

Customers often come in hoping for better sleep, less stress, or comfort after a long day. Many people report that hemp products help them with exactly that, and you should help them find something to try. The rule is about how you talk. Saying a product treats, cures or prevents a condition is an unapproved drug claim in the eyes of the FDA and FTC, and that risk falls on the store.

StepWhat you do
1. LISTENLet them explain what they want help with. Do not interrupt or judge.
2. TRANSLATETurn condition words into experience words (see below).
3. MATCHSuggest products customers commonly choose for that experience, and say why.
4. CHECKAsk the safety questions. Always.
5. SETSet expectations and invite them back to tell you how it went.

TRANSLATE: condition words into experience words

They sayYou think and talk about
"Insomnia"Winding down at night
"Anxiety"Feeling calm and easygoing
"Arthritis pain"Comfort after a long day, post-workout recovery
"Nausea" or "no appetite"Settling in and enjoying a meal

MATCH: talk about what people choose

  • "A lot of customers pick this for their evening wind-down."
  • "People who want something mellow tend to like this one."
  • "This balm is popular for after the gym."

Give the reason: the cannabinoid (CBN, CBD, Delta-9), the terpenes, the onset time, or the format.

CHECK: the safety questions

  • Are you taking any medications? Blood thinners, sedatives, antidepressants and seizure meds matter most. If yes: "Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor first."
  • Pregnant or nursing? If yes, we do not recommend any cannabinoid products. Full stop.
  • Driving or working soon?
  • First time with THC?

SET: expectations and a reason to return

"Everyone's body is different, so start low, give it time, and tell us how it goes next visit." That one line protects the customer and builds a relationship.

โœ… SAY THIS

"A lot of folks pick this CBD and CBN blend to wind down at night. Are you on any medications? If so, check with your pharmacist first."

๐Ÿšซ NOT THAT

"This will cure your anxiety, and you can probably stop taking your meds."

โš ๏ธ Watch Out: Never say cures, treats, heals, fixes or prescribes. Never say "this will help your [condition]" or "use this instead of your medication." For serious illness like cancer, seizures or heart disease, be warm, share general info, and say: "Your doctor should be part of this decision."

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: When a regular says a product changed their life, it is fine to say "I'm really glad it's been working for you." Just do not repeat their story to the next customer as a promise.

Honesty wins repeat business

  • Do not know an answer? Say so, then find out.
  • If a cheaper product is the better fit, recommend it. That customer will be back.
  • Remember names and past purchases, and ask how the last one went.

When things get tense

Some customers get frustrated about ID rules, prices, or a product that did not work for them. Stay calm, repeat back what they said, explain clearly, and offer an alternative. If it escalates, bring in a manager. That is not failing, that is teamwork.

๐ŸŽฏ COUNTER CHALLENGE

A customer rubs her knuckles and says: "My arthritis is killing me. Which one of these heals joints?" Walk through all five steps in your head before you answer.
